KitchenAid KGRS205TSS 30in Gas Range - Stainless Steel Review

KitchenAid KGRS205TSS 30in Gas Range - Stainless SteelI just bought the black version of this product locally for $1060, tax included.

This range generally functions O.K., with excellent surface burner control.

My Kitchenaid range was flawed. The upper panel on which the control panel was mounted was too flimsy.Pushing the control buttons caused an annoying amount of flex that gave the range a very cheap toy-like feel.To make matters worse, when the panel flexed back during button depression, the resultant shift in load on the right side panel cause an annoying "pong" sound as the slightly warped right sheet-metal side shifted from an outward bow to an inward bow.So using the controls not only had a bad feel, but yielded an annoying sound with each button push.

Rather than call out a service repair person under warranty and rick that they could not fix the problem, or order a replacement range and risk a repeat of the problem, I fixed the problem myself. At my local "Orchard Supply Hardware" I bought two steel "Stanley" pre-drilled 10" plates that were about 1" wide.I mounted them vertically on each side edge in the back, spanning the upper panel down along the sides. This $8 repair fixed the problem...completely.The panel no longer has significant flex, and the side doesn't make the annoying popping sound.

The engineers of this appliance should go back to the drawing board, and modify the sheet metal structure such that the upper panel does not flex so much under normal use.

This range has a "convection bake" and "convection roast" mode. The instruction manual fails to discuss the difference in these modes in terms of how the heating elements (upper, lower, and convection fan) function. It also does not describe why one mode is better than the other for different kinds of food.

The broiler is a bit uneven.

I don't associate grade "C" quality with the name Kitchenaid. But unfortunately they only earned a "C" with this product.

Bertazzoni Master Series : A365GGVXENG 36in Pro-Style Gas Range, 5 Sealed Burners, Convection - NG Review

Bertazzoni Master Series : A365GGVXENG 36in Pro-Style Gas Range, 5 Sealed Burners, Convection - NGAfter much research I bought this range 2 years ago, and overall I'm very pleased with it. Here's how I rate my Bertazzoni from good to bad:

First the best part: It's strikingly beautiful, and the cooktop is amazingly versatile in its heat range. This is also my first time using convection, and I LOVE it, I had no idea roast chicken could be so good! The price point is also fantastic.

Now the pretty good:I also really like the electric ignition feature. It took
a bit to get used to, it can be tricky to get the oven properly lit. You have to keep the door ajar untill its fully lit (takes around 60 seconds)and if you close the door too soon the flame goes out. So a little fussy, but no big deal.

Now the kinda bad: The oven is HUGE, probably overkill for my family of four.
I feel like a huge energy waster getting it all fired up to bake a simple casserole. Also you MUST use two oven thermometers if you are doing something delicate like a souffle. (Which I have done, and it turned out beautifully.) One side gets hotter than the other and the oven temp NEVER matches what the setting on the dial says. Using the convection feature and two thermometers corrects for this problem completly. I get extremly even and uniform browning while baking 4 trays of cookies at once and my pizza is perfectly crispy. In retrospect I might have gone with the 30" model, but I REALLY wanted 5 burners. Anyways...

The worst part: It has a truly uncool (uncool, get it? Sorry, bad pun) cooling feature that vents hot air into your kitchen. The first page of the manual explains that you will need to double the exhaust in your kitchen to compensate. Which I am in no position to do at this point. It's fine in the winter, actually cuts back on our furnace usage, but in the summer it makes my house an inferno. So, light summertime baking is no longer an option. Not that I love baking in the summertime anyway, so I am learning to deal with it. I do wish I had known this ahead of time, I can imagine it would be a deal breaker if you lived in New Mexico (I live in Portland, Oregon by the way.)

I do love my Bertazzoni, and I would recommend it to someone who loves to putz around the kitchen, and has time and patience to deal with the quirks. If you are busy and highly value precision in an oven, this might not be for you.

GE Profile : PGB975SEMSS 30in Gas Range with 5 Sealed Burners Review

GE Profile : PGB975SEMSS 30in Gas Range with 5 Sealed BurnersI just installed this stove in my home on 3/29/2008. Over the weekend we tried every function we could think of. We baked we Convection baked we tried the lower oven and every burner We even used the griddle. This is a fine piece of equipment. There are two complaints which is why the 4 stars.
1. The stove had a small dent on the left side I noticed right away. This dent is low and when slid in is not noticeable. I called Home Depot right away and they said they will credit us $50. I was hoping for a little more but ...the thought of loading it back up and waiting for a new one wasn't worth it. I also after getting it all installed and in place noticed a small indentation on the front behind the handle. This looked like a factory problem but what can I do?

2. The knobs get hot when baking!!! The front panel around the knobs get hot!!! Maybe enough to burn a small child.

Electrolux : EW30DS65GS 30in Slide-in Dual Fuel Range, 4 Sealed Burners, Convection - Stainless Stee Review

Electrolux : EW30DS65GS 30in Slide-in Dual Fuel Range, 4 Sealed Burners, Convection - Stainless SteeWe purchased this range just over a year ago as a part of a major remodel of our home.We originally wanted the GE Cafe' series but were talked into this new Electrolux unit by our local appliance center as being "more reliable".This range has been a nightmare from the day it was installed. We have endured multiple repair calls for various major and minor issues:

1) The first time we used the lower oven (Thanksgiving Day 2008, the day after installation) the door locked shut and could not be opened - with rolls in the oven.We shut off the heat but could still not open the door for 10-15 more minutes until the rolls were ruined. The dealer attempted to repair this issue a few times, with instruction and new parts from Electrolux techs. One repair was a six hour marathon requiring insulation to be removed and elements replaced. The oven worked a few times without locking and then the problem recurred. Two more sets of parts including replacing the lower oven door with an identically designed unit still didn't fix the problem.Electrolux techs clearly were grasping for solutions and had no clue as to how to effect the repair.

2)The main oven would take 20-22 minutes to pre-heat, even on the "rapid pre-heat setting".Were told by techs that it is the way the range is designed because of the "hidden element." The replacement range pre-heats a little more quickly.

3)Two of the four gas burners would not ignite regularly. The igniters would click but not ignite. This was an intermittent problem. The tech said that we weren't hitting "just the right spot" on the dial when turning it on.Even if correct (which I dispute - we had no problem with the other two burners) what kind of poor design requires that kind of operational precision?

4) After one month the center metal grid snapped in half while cleaning (using light pressure - honest folks!)Vendor replaced the item without question.

5) After about 10 months the electronic control panel would intermittently not work when trying to operate the main oven. The temperature could be set, but after pressing the start touchpad the temperature would reset and not turn on the oven.

I called Electrolux/Frigidaire directly and due to the long record of repairs and reported problems, and since the problems could not be fixed, they replaced the entire unit without argument. The new unit arrived in about a week and was installed by the original vendor. After one use (10 minutes of boiling eggs) all of the ignitors went out.We have been lighting the range burners with matches for a week while waiting for the repair parts.

Pros:
1) Cool, very high tech electronic touch pad control panel.
2) Attractive appearance - clever, graduated power up oven lights.
3) Very smooth gliding racks in the main oven.
4) Good self-cleaning performance.
5) Small lower oven has limited use due to size but is very convenient to have for small items and warming.
6) Efficient heating by all four gas burners.Good variation of sizes and BTU outputs.

Cons:
1) Unreliable - Doesn't work well (a pretty big con.)
2) The main oven is relatively small in capacity and shallow front to back - a large pizza won't fit unless the edge is folded up against the front door or rear of the oven. We had to remove all racks but one and set it on the lowest guiderail to accomodate a moderate sized turkey.
3) The lower over is very small (height-wise)...can't put a casserole with a lid on it in the oven.
4) Stainless surfaces scratch very easily, even with careful cleaning.A single grain of salt scratched the SS surface of the cooktop the first time we cleaned it.We have since learned to carefully daub all "specks" off of the cook top before wiping it clean.
5) The oven racks are difficult to remove and replace to adjust baking levels. All racks but the center rack must be removed if using the convection setting to allow for "proper circulation of heated air" (per owner's manual.)
6) The oven fan runs for over two hours after the unit is turned off - a cool down feature I suppose. (This may be a "pro" for some people but is annoying.)
7) The exhaust from the oven vents out the FRONT of the unit instead of the rear or rear/top which would take advantage of the overhead exhaust fan.Uncomfortable when cooking and baking at the same time and really fills the kitchen with acrid smelling fumes during the self cleaning cycle.
8) Slooooow to pre-heat.

We may just have been unlucky and received two "lemons", but with so many good alternatives on the market in this price range I would recommend looking to another manufacturer for a dual fuel slide in unit.If another breakdown occurs within the next few months we will get rid of this range at a loss and buy from another company. However,if we experience no problems I will return and edit this rating up to "three stars".

Kitchenaid KGRS807S 30" standing Gas Range, Warming Drawer, Self-C Review

Kitchenaid KGRS807S 30' standing Gas Range, Warming Drawer, Self-CI have had this stove for about 9 months and love it.I have had no mechanical or quality issues at all. When researching this range before I purchased it, I found a couple of reviews of problems after using the self cleaning cycle the very first time. With that in mind I have used the self cleaning cylce perhaps 4 or 5 times over the last 9 months so that any problem would be covered under warranty but I have not had any problems. The oven comes to temperature rapidly and I like the size and having 3 racks. The range top is the best feature. The continuous grate allows you to use the whole surface while cooking, sliding rather than picking up heavy pots.It also allows you to use a heavy large iron gridle over two burners and grill food.We use it over the medium and low burners and can get up to 600 degrees on the top.The power burner is very powerful and useful for large pots of water.I have not used the wok feature. The controls are easy and self explanatory.I like the controls on the front so I don't have to reach over the range top to use them; however, they are sensitive and you can touch something accidentily. But it beeps when you do, so its not really a problem. The only negative might be the weight of the two grates.Picking them up to clean them is a chore.

Frigidaire Gas Slide-In Range, Stainless Steel Review

Frigidaire Gas Slide-In Range, Stainless SteelWe purchased this range about 6 months ago and love it.It cooks beautifully, the convention is great. The clean up of the stove top is easy. There is a lot of power for getting the big pots going. The same level surface makes it easy to slide pots around. The only caution I have is not using a really large pot for a long period of time on high (like deep frying for 2 hours) because it melted the plastic corner "leg" on the bottom of the grate.

KitchenAid Architect Series II : KGSS907SSS 30in Slide-In Gas Range, 4 Sealed Burners, Convection Review

KitchenAid Architect Series II : KGSS907SSS 30in Slide-In Gas Range, 4 Sealed Burners, ConvectionThis stove/oven (KGSS907SBL02)has been a nightmare since we purchased July 2009. Took five service calls to correct an ignitor problem. They fixed it by installing a whole newporcelain top (within a month of purchase). Then while using the Self-Clean Oven feature a GFI blew out, the display panel on the stove disappeared and the oven door remained locked. Waiting now for diagnosis and repair. Avanti Elba : DG2401C 24in Freestanding Gas Range with 4 Sealed Burners Review

Avanti Elba : DG2401C 24in Freestanding Gas Range with 4 Sealed BurnersI have to write a short review to say how nice these Elba units are. I have the 2403 Duel Fuel model. Ignore the Avanti name, they are only the importers and I know their reputation in the US is not of high quality. Elba however is an Italian cooking appliance manufacturer independent of Avanti. My unit is of the same quality of a Viking or other high-end stainless range. Everything is solid & perfectly finished. The oven is spot-on accurate top, bottom, front, back. The triple ring burner is fantastic for large pot quick boiling. The oven programming function is deceptively complete although takes some time to learn. Lastly, the Elba units are about 1/2 the price of similar 24" American units.

KitchenAid Architect Series II : KGSK901SSS 30in Slide-In Gas Range, 4 Sealed Burners, Self-Clean Review

KitchenAid Architect Series II : KGSK901SSS 30in Slide-In Gas Range, 4 Sealed Burners, Self-CleanI've had this for less than 5 years and it's now good for the trash.

First, upon receiving it, we had problems with the electronic control and it had to be replaced altogether. Took over a month to get the part and fix it.

Second, when the oven is used, there's a cooling fan that starts up and it's quite noisy. It doesn't stop until the oven is cool, so even after it's shut down, the fan continues to run, ruining any nice and cozy candle dinner you might have planned.

Lastly, we used the auto-clean feature for the first time after about 4 years and it simply killed the display again. We called the repair guy and just to open it and determine what had to be changed would've required to completely disassemble the thing since the door was locked in place by the auto-clean (safety measure). Even then, any part to be changed would've cost (with labour and all) around $1000. So it's now headed for the trash and we'll buy a new one.

DON'T buy any of these Kitchen Aid series.

Frigidaire Gallery : FPGS3085KF 30in Gas Range - Stainless Steel Review

Frigidaire Gallery : FPGS3085KF 30in Gas Range - Stainless SteelThis oven totally exceeded my expectations (there were no reviews online when I bought it and I couldn't find the model in stores.) Beautiful, easy to use, easy to clean (top is black by the way, not stainless steel, which you can't tell from the image). However, it looks good. OK it does have that silly "Chicken Nuggets" button on it (please leave me my illusions that I'll be doing something more glamorous than heating up the nuggets, even if that does happen occasionally!). It's a mixture of shiny handles and stainless steel, which matches other appliances well, no finger prints, continuous grate on top, great heating/cooking etc., warming drawer, bottom oven rack that slides out when you open door, etc. No complaints. (Oh, except I had to buy the broiler pan separately. No biggie.)

GE Cafe : CGS980SEMSS 30in Free Standing Gas Range with 5 Sealed Burners Review

GE Cafe : CGS980SEMSS 30in Free Standing Gas Range with 5 Sealed BurnersAn afternoon of visiting a few stores and a price match with 10% off, brought the price down to about $1800.Still not cheap... but we found out quickly that today, $1000 doesn't even buy you a nice gas stove with extra features... just a gas stove cheaply made. We've owned this for about 2-months and it's fun to cook again! I can actually cook with 5 large pots and pans at the same time! They moved the burners out 3-inches, so it's still 30" but you have more cooking area.I can boil water in 5 minutes, program it to shut off after the food has cooked for a set period of time, and the center burner cooks pancakes and bacon just perfectly at 6000 BTU's (all other stoves with oval center burners were 5000 BTU's). Sorry, haven't tried the convection yet.... but it converts automatically.Have read other people's concerns over the fan noise, honestly we haven't noticed, but most of our cooking is done well under 425 degrees. The stove will give you a nice commercial look, one burner gives you professional level 18,000 BTU's, and for the price it's a great choice. If you're a professional chef/cook, I can't imagine you would be happy, it would be all look and not enough power. But for us, large family, cooking 2-meals at home per day, sometimes different items for the finicky kid, it had all the extra features we wanted at a great price without getting into a commercial stove with a big price tag.
